Week 49 - Emma

What is your name?
Emma White.

What sort of photography do you do?
Landscapes, Seascapes, nature and travel mostly, although I like shooting sports and have started to do more ‘people’ shots of recent times.

How long have you been shooting?
I think that I have always had a camera but it got my first dslr in about 2005 – an Olympus – for our backpacking trip. Then in about 2007 I picked up a Nikon D40x and I did a few classes at the local photography school and have been getting more serious ever since.

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, anything you really love to work with)
mmmm gear #dreamyeyes .. my camera of course a recently acquired Nikon D7100 (are you seeing a pattern). I also love my BlackRapid strap and my 9 stop variable filter. I seem to have a thing about bags – bags that don’t do what I want or need them to do. Which reminds me I need to sell some – anyone want a bag ???

Paradise! Otherwise known as Newcastle, NSW Australia, a beachside coastal regional metropolis about 1.5hr to the north of Sydney (we are the 1st or 2nd largest non-metro city in the state), surrounded by beaches, vineyards, mountains and farms. We are truly blessed to live where we do.

Is there a Twitter account you would really like to see take over @WeRPhotography for a week?
hmmm that’s a hard one because I’m guessing guys like @colbybrownphoto; @Lekrom; @gdanmitchell all barely have time to scratch themselves let alone curate another handle :-) !!! um so whoooo else would I like to see … actually in all seriousness I’m keen for anyone because I love the variety of styles and info that we get every week.

Sunday 8 December 2013

Week 48 - Sophia

What is your name?
Sophia Banks.

What sort of photography do you do?
These days I do wedding photography. I would like to be doing more fine art photography but my ideas and projects are ambitious these days and would be expensive to create. I really love being able to paint a scene with strobes.

How long have you been shooting?
I took up photography about 8 years ago and worked as photo assistant for a few years. I have been a wedding photographer for about 4 years now.

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, anything you really love to work with)
I am partial to the Canon 24-70 2.8 for the most part. My dream camera is the Leica M9 with a 35mm lens. I got to use one a few times when I was assisting.

Where can we find you? Twitter account/s, blogs, galleries, any and all web presence that you feel comfortable sharing.
My current photography portfolio is http://www.sophiabanksphoto.com/
I have an art series represented by Galeri Sakura
I am on twitter with the handle @SophiaPhotos but I mostly talk about trans liberation there.

Where do you live and work? You can be as specific as providing your lat-long coordinates, or as vague as "planet earth".
Toronto, Canada.

Is there a Twitter account you would really like to see take over @WeRPhotography for a week?
Seems most of the photographers who have work I really admire are not on twitter.

Sunday 1 December 2013

Week 47 - Stewart

What is your name?
Stewart Baird.

What sort of photography do you do?
Landscape, nature and people (some weddings).

How long have you been shooting?
Hard question to answer… my first camera was a Polaroid in 1980, first SLR was an Olympus OM-30 back in ’84.  I really got back into photography about 5 years ago with my first DSLR - I love digital!

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, anything you really love to work with)
My Canon 5D Mark III with a 24-105mm attached is probably it!  But I now have an Olympus OM-D EM-5 + 14mm on my person basically all the time and I love how that allows me to shoot, edit and upload on the go (using Eye-FI card and an iPhone).

Week 46 - Trevor

What is your name?
Trevor Coultart.

What sort of photography do you do?
Bit of a mixture. Mostly observational stuff. My personal work has tended to focus on textures and details, but I've noticed I'm increasingly photographing people, which is changing the way I see things.

How long have you been shooting?
On and off, about 35 years, but for most of that times it's been nothing more than a hobby. After 25 years in office work, however, I'm now on my second year of a photography degree as part of the search for a more fulfilling way of earning a living. Wish me luck.

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, anything you really love to work with)
Having shot most of my life on basic compact cameras, the whole "gear" thing is a bit of a novelty so my favourite tends to be the most recent addition to my kit at any time. Which right now means my newest lens: a Tamron 10-24mm that's been on my Canon 40D pretty much ever since I got it.

Where can we find you? Twitter account/s, blogs, galleries, any and all web presence that you feel comfortable sharing.
I'm in lots of places, and you can find links to all if them at www.coultart.com/trevor

Where do you live and work? You can be as specific as providing your lat-long coordinates, or as vague as "planet earth".
Live in Hertfordshire, England, and am studying at the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield.

Is there a Twitter account you would really like to see take over @WeRPhotography for a week?
Not really, so I'll use this space to recommend everyone follow @petapixel which is constantly a great source of photography news and inspiration.

Sunday 17 November 2013

Week 45 - Harry

What is your name?
Harry Guinness.

What sort of photography do you do?
I like to take shots of interesting people. I've worked with a lot of Dublin's street performers. I'm also doing a personal series of portraits of Dublin's homeless. I've also got another personal project working with bodybuilders while they work out. Having said that, I generally try to have my camera with me wherever I am so I shoot landscapes when the opportunity presents itself.

How long have you been shooting?
About two years.

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, anything you really love to work with)
I love my Canon 40mm lens. It's so small that it adds no noticeable weight to my camera and it's so versatile. Especially for the street stuff, I can get in really tight for portraits or go wide for more environmental shots and it just nails it.

I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention my love for Peak Design and Triggertrap. The leash and cuff are the best straps imaginable. I generally just use the cuff and have my camera in hand when I'm walking about the city. Triggertrap's mobile dongle is a hell of a lot of fun.

Tara Sutherland

What sort of photography do you do?
Underwater and Landscape.

How long have you been shooting?
Just over 10 years.

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, anything you really love to work with)
I don’t think I do have a favourite right now. All my gear is loved equally although I do take a lot of pleasure from putting together my underwater rig and having it nestled in its box all ready to get wet.

Week 43 - Robert

What is your name?
Robert Catto.

What sort of photography do you do?
I’m a freelance photographer specialising in performing arts and live events.  I used to be a lighting designer for theatre, dance, opera etc - so I fell into photography from there, after trying to build a portfolio of my own work for myself.

How long have you been shooting?
At all?  Since about 1989 when my dad gave me his old Canon FT-b and a bag of prime lenses to take to university, which I gradually upgraded to a T-90 that came travelling with me in 1996.  Professionally, full time since 2002.

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, anything you really love to work with)
I’m pretty in love with my Fuji X-Pro 1 kit (18/35/60mm lenses included) - it brings back some of the simplicity of that first camera I got handed down to me.

Week 42 - John

What is your name?
John Lechner, I am also known as John Vacy or ESJ, the ESJ relates to my equestrian work. I was known as Eventing Safety John, which got shortened to ESJ and has stuck thats why my business name is ESJ Photo.

What sort of photography do you do?
Until recently my focus had been mostly on Equestrian sport, Eventing in particular with some landscape work also.
But in the last 12 months I have really redefined my work and I would have to say my focus is on travel, landscapes and portraiture. Most important is I love to be outdoors shooting not in a studio.

How long have you been shooting?
I cannot remember a time when I didn't have a camera, there have always been cameras in my life.

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, anything you really love to work with)
My favourite is without doubt my Nikon D800, I carry it with me everywhere. It is just a beautiful piece of kit.

I am a gadget person though, I love my bags (I currently have 3 but sold another 3 on eBay 8 weeks ago to de-clutter), my everyday bag is a Tenba messenger which is great but the Peak Design Leash is also the most versatile camera strap I have ever used.

Where can we find you? Twitter account/s, blogs, galleries, any and all web presence that you feel comfortable sharing.
My website is esjphoto.com.au I have a personal twitter @johnvacy and business @esj_photo.

Where do you live and work? You can be as specific as providing your lat-long coordinates, or as vague as "planet earth".
I live in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales in Australia, about 2 hours north of Sydney. This is my home but I never feel settled unless I am travelling. I just spent a month in the USA on a family holiday. I have trips to Cambodia plus Amsterdam and Iceland planned for 2014, these trips are purely photography.

Gilbert Potts.

What sort of photography do you do?
Digital snapshots and fully manual. I like depth compression textural street photography without humans and animals. Minimalism but more in terms of limiting the number of colours and shapes. My ideal pic has three or less colours and one or two shapes. Greatly inspired by the art of Jeffrey Smart and the visual design of Jaques Tati.

How long have you been shooting?
32 years.

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, anything you really love to work with)

What is your name?

What sort of photography do you do?
I'm an "average Jane" (very amateur) photographer who enjoys landscape photography.
I also sketch and watercolor paint from my own photos and the photos of others (with permission).

How long have you been shooting?
I started shooting while still in high school in 1976, after living and working in Yosemite National Park, with the Upward Bound Program.
I took a college course in black & white photography. I learned to print my own B/W film images.

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, anything you really love to work with)
I can't pinpoint a favorite piece of gear for my photographic needs; I shoot with a Canon Xsi, my iPhone and a couple "point and shoots".
However, I created a "SketchPac" for my watercolor gear that travels with me wherever I go.

Where can we find you? Twitter account/s, blogs, galleries, any and all web presence that you feel comfortable sharing.
My personal twitter account is @MinThomp

Sunday 15 September 2013

Week 36 - Kyle

What is your name?
Kyle.

What sort of photography do you do?
Mostly action - mainly emergency services and sports, which stems from my involvement in those areas.

How long have you been shooting?
I started with a digital camera in about 2003, and bought my first DSLR around 2008 so it's been in the past 5 years that I've become increasingly 'serious' about it.

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, anything you really love to work with)
I'd have to say my 70-200 2.8 is my favourite and go-to piece of gear. Paired with a full-frame body it's great for capturing the sort of action I'm often shooting and gives a great degree of control.

Where can we find you? Twitter account/s, blogs, galleries, any and all web presence that you feel comfortable sharing.
Across Twitter, Instagram, facebook and web I am 'liveitseeit' (Live It, See It) - add the @, .com or facebook.com/... and you'll find me. Some of my older stuff is on flickr at 'In the Smoke'.

Where do you live and work? You can be as specific as providing your lat-long coordinates, or as vague as "planet earth".
I'm an(other) Aussie - originally from Perth on the West coast and for many years now in Sydney.

Is there a Twitter account you would really like to see take over @WeRPhotography for a week?
There is a great PJ here in Sydney working for the Sydney Morning Herald, Nick Moir - who does a lot of the emergency incident photography as well as wildlife, landscape and storms. @nampix

How long have you been shooting?
All my life.

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, anything you really love to work with)
Right now my Samsung Galaxy 3 does a pretty good job for my needs. I've been playing with some different apps but a good eye, a bit of planning and a clear shot is all you need.

Where can we find you? Twitter account/s, blogs, galleries, any and all web presence that you feel comfortable sharing.
My personal twitter account is @ThornburyRocks

Where do you live and work? You can be as specific as providing your lat-long coordinates, or as vague as "planet earth".
After 20 years living in Melbourne, I've just moved back to my hometown of Bendigo in central Victoria to begin an Arts Degree. Not working at all, which means more time for art, writing and photography! Poor but very very happy.

What is your name?
Steven Rhall.
I’m hosting @wearephotograpy this week as part of various Australian rotation curation twitter accounts participating in NAIDOC week. I am one of the Indigenous Australians twitter users taking part.

NAIDOC is an acronym for (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) Week. More information is available here http://www.naidoc.org.au and here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NAIDOC_Week

What sort of photography do you do?
All sorts of photography and in fact, try not to be limited by the definition of what is, or what might be photography. Were these boundaries might fall interests me.

In recent years a commercial practice developed from photographing bands. Learning the craft via commercial programs at Uni, helped further develop this but my own personal practice has came through as something that seems more sustainable and worthwhile concerning a passion for photography. Photography, or more broadly Photomedia, is the basis or vehicle for exploring and/or expressing ideas at the moment.

How long have you been shooting?
About 15 years or so.

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, any thing you really love to work with)
Probably my Crumpler Back Pack. I’ve had it for almost 10 years and it’s carried me and my gear many miles without falling apart. I like how it can be rearranged to suit a variety of gear and doesn’t look so much like a camera bag.

What is your name?
My Name is Alex Boone.

What sort of photography do you do?
Various things peak my interest in the photographic world, but I love street photography.

I have had a camera attached to me since 2008, and haven't put it down since.

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, any thing you really love to work with)
It would have to be my Fuji X-E1, I take it everywhere I go. It’s a small camera that packs a punch and it gets compliments like “nice film camera, dude”

Week 24 - Lucy

What is your name?
Lucy Shires.

What sort of photography do you do?
A mixture of abstract and urban exploration.

How long have you been shooting?
I got my first DSLR in the summer of 2010 after I saw some pictures of my son taken by a family member, I fell in love with the blurry background and sharpness of the portrait. In October 2010, I moved away from family snaps and now I'm on this amazing photographic journey :-)

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, anything you really love to work with)
My kit is very simple, it consists of a D3 and a 50mm 1.4, carried in a KATA 465 bag. I have been on the journey of having lenses for every eventuality, it makes your bag heavy and tripods suck! So all my gear is my favourite :-)

Week 22 - Marc

What is your name?
Marc Lafrenière.

What sort of photography do you do?
A lot of people would peg me as a landscape photographer. That is true, but only to a certain degree. I also love architecture, urban, & street photography. I like to dip into the portrait photography world once in a while.

How long have you been shooting?
I acquired my first digital point & shoot camera in 2005. That's when I first realized photography could become a life long passion & hobby.

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, any thing you really love to work with)
I never leave my place without my trusty Fujifilm X100S. I purchased the original X100, and never got tired of it. I believe I will be a Fujifilm fan forever.
If I don't bring my X100S around, I usually pick up my Nikon D300 with a 24mm f/1.4 - always loved that combination!

Where can we find you? Twitter account/s, blogs, galleries, any and all web presence that you feel comfortable sharing.
You can find me all over the Internet! That sounds terribly frightening... you can catch me on Twitter (@lafrenieremarc), Tumblr (blog.marclafreniere.ca), 500px (500px.com/marclafreniere), & Flickr (flickr.com/lafrenieremarc).
I also administer a worldwide collective of Fujifilm X-Series photographers: myx100.tumblr.com - we now have 100 members from around the world, with close to 1000 followers on Tumblr. We have an excellent array of talent and work on the site.

Where do you live and work? You can be as specific as providing your lat-long coordinates, or as vague as "planet earth".
I'm a French-Canadian, originally from Chapleau, Ontario. Most people don't know where that is... it's in Northern Ontario, near Timmins. That usually situates them geographically. I have also lived in Sudbury & Ottawa, Ontario.
I'm currently working, and living, in St. John's, Newfoundland & Labrador. Far away from home, on a windy, foggy, and rainy rock in the North Atlantic.

Avatar Challenge

Recently, when I was doing the three-day overlap to change from Friday-Thursday to Monday-Sunday guest tweeter schedule, I asked a question about Twitter avatars for rotation curation accounts.

(tl:dr Make/find/buy* us an overlay that we can use as brand identification on Twitter while still allowing our guest tweeters freedom to identify themselves during their week.)

My decision is that the best way to handle the competing challenges of brand recognition and guest freedom is to go with a standard overlay that all guest tweeters would put over their chosen avatar pic.

But what overlay? Good question. A very good question. A difficult question. What's the next question? Ask me one on sport!

I think that, first and foremost, we need an overlay that says "Photographer!" loud and clear. It also needs to take up very little room on a square frame, and it needs to have lots of transparent space that allows the guest tweeter's chosen avatar pic to show through.

Actually, very first and very foremost, it has to be an image which is copyright free or to which we could be granted a licence for free. We don't want to be "that guy".

So I turn to you, gentle reader, and ask you to solve the problems. There are three things you could possibly do to help.

  • Design a graphic overlay and grant us a license to use it as a Twitter avatar, and possibly here on this blog as well,
  • Find a suitable Creative Commons licensed image and let us know about it, or
  • Find a suitable copyright image and buy* us a license to use it as a Twitter avatar.

A suggestion:

Given the size (128px) and shape (square) limitations, I like the idea of a combination of a colour wheel and an aperture ring.  Something like this one, but at f/2 rather than f/8. (If you're a non-photographer designer coming here to win fame and fortune, that means with a bigger open inner circle.)

Another problem would be where to store this image and how to make it available to guest tweeters. Feedback I've received from other rotation curation accounts that use an overlay indicates that the admin solicits an avatar pic from the upcoming guest tweeter, applies the overlay and then sets the avatar during the handover housekeeping period. I would suggest that most, if not all, of @WeRPhotography's guest tweeters would have the ability to do this themselves.

NOTE: If you are considering being a guest tweeter, but you can't do this due to a lack of software, experience or for other reasons, please, please don't let that put you off. It's your photographic vision that we want you to share, not necessarily your technical skills.

So! Please, please, please, get to it. Make/find/buy* us an overlay that we can use as brand identification on Twitter while still allowing our guest tweeters freedom to identify themselves during their week.

If you have something, please leave a link in the comments or tweet/DM them to @WeRPhotography or @JustJimWillDo.

*Please don't just pay out money for something without checking with me first!

Week 13 (and a bit) - Jim

What is your name?
Jim Campbell.

What sort of photography do you do?
A bit of everything! I shoot a lot of cricket, and I love going for a walk around the riverbanks in my local area.

How long have you been shooting?
Since the early 1970s. I started with a Minolta SRT-101 and moved quite quickly to a Nikon FtN. I don't miss the "film and darkroom" days at all. That stuff was smelly, messy and unforgiving!

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, anything you really love to work with)

  • My Nikon D90 body (which ALWAYS has its MB-D80 battery pack on it. It has to really, I've long since lost the original battery compartment cover!)
  • For cricket, my Tamron 200-500mm lens. It's only f/5.6 max, but hey, cricket is a sunny day sport!
  • My Tamron 90mm macro lens. Great for creepy crawlies and for portraits. What? No, I didn't mean anything by that. Not at all.
  • My Pocketwizard radio triggers and my Triggertrap remote trigger. I just wish I could make the damned things work together!
  • Since I've already shown my age with the Minolta SRT-101, I wear and love my Scottrvest sleeveless shooting jacket. Yeah, I know, but it's better than the old green fishing vest that I wore for years and years!

Where can we find you? Twitter account/s, blogs, galleries, any and all web presence that you feel comfortable sharing.

  • On Twitter - @JustJimWillDo Not more than 18, ok maybe 20 hours a day. It really is an addiction!
  • I sometimes blog some stuff on In My Image. I've just noticed though, that it's been nearly six months since I've posted anything there. For shame!

Where do you live and work? You can be as specific as providing your lat-long coordinates, or as vague as "planet earth".
I live in Bacchus Marsh, which is in country Victoria, Australia. Known as the "market garden" of Victoria, it is now a cross between a farming community and a commuter suburb. I love it here.

Is there a Twitter account you would really like to see take over @WeRPhotography for a week?

  • As you all know, I really want @TheRealNimoy to take over, even if it was only for a few days.
  • Otherwise I'd just love lots of keen, dedicated photographers both 'Pro' and 'Am' to come along and share their work and have a great time for a week.

Discussion - A Flickr Group?

A question raised by Allan (@allan_saw) during his week as guest tweeter was, "Should we have a Flickr group for @WeRPhotography?"

So what do you think? Yea or Nay?

Here are some discussion points. If you have feedback during this transition weekend (12/13/14/15 April, depending on where you are), then leave a comment here or just tweet to @WeRPhotography. If you come across this post later, you can leave a comment or send an email.

There are many "groups" on Flickr. Some have purely grown from Flickr users themselves and their specialist interest areas. eg Macros, Strobist lighting, particular cameras, nature, wildlife, nudes, b&w, etc and very much etc.

Some Flickr groups grow out of external influences. Recent guest tweeter Haje Jan Kamps has one for his online photography school and one for his Triggertrap devices. Inaugural tweeter, Daniella Bowker has one for Small Aperture. Other guests may have started their own for various reasons and I would not be surprised if many of you are members of at least one Flickr group.
  • Who would be a member?
    • Just Admins?
    • Admins and guest tweeters?
    • All followers?
  • Who would run it?
  • What would we do with it?
    • Show off our images? Can we not already do that with our own, individual, Flickr accounts. Or 500px or 1px or personal websites? Yes, of course we can, but is gathering them in one place of added value?
    • Ask for, and hopefully receive, individual image critiques? Sure, we can ask, but who is going to do the critiques. I love to critique images for people who genuinely want to receive such feedback. I think I'm pretty good at it, as well.
The trouble is that most people just want to receive a "Great pic, dude" or similar, and in today's age of digital imagery and ubiquitous camera phones, most images deserve no more.
Some deserve much less. Not our guest tweeter's images, of course, but you know what I mean.
Who else would provide thoughtful, artistic critiques? We have had some wonderful photographers on @WeRPhotography (and there are more to come*, I assure you). Some of them are full-time professional photographers, some of them are not and therefore have other full-time jobs. Do we feel comfortable about asking any of them to provide a lot of critiques? I went through a 365 project with a college student once and I was spending much more time looking at, analysing, and discussing his images than he was spending to capture and process them!
    • Hold competitions. That is an interesting thought. Different "themes", "subjects", "techniques"? Who will decide on the topics, who will adjudicate? Who will arbitrate the contested contests?
  • Why are we just talking about Flickr? Are there other options?
  • Anything else? Let me know.
*No, not Leonard Nimoy aka @TheRealNimoy. Not yet. You have disappointed me, guest tweeters; the One Million Internet Points remain available.

Week 14 - Michael

What is your name?
Michael Toye

What sort of photography do you do?
Black and white street photography with a smile and a nod to architecture

How long have you been shooting?
Since 2004.

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, any thing you really love to work with)
I have recently moved to Leica Monochrom. I'm not precisely sure if I could go back to an alternate system now. It's honed to play a single role in its life and, for street photography, it excels. My fingerless gloves too! You might laugh, but they're essential kit for literally being outside for 8 hours.

Where can we find you? Twitter account/s, blogs, galleries, any and all web presence that you feel comfortable sharing.
On Twitter, I'm @RealMichaelToye
My blog is The Stormtroopers Are Coming!
I do have galleries on 1x and 500px, but you'll catch my most recent images on Flickr

Where do you live and work? You can be as specific as providing your lat-long coordinates, or as vague as "planet earth".
I live just outside of London, and am not working at the moment. I am seizing the opportunity to get out there and shoot and to help others with their photography; I'm running photography walking tours around the real sights and scenes in London.

Is there a Twitter account you would really like to see take over @WeRPhotography for a week?
I've recently stumbled across the work of Ian Brumpton, @IanBrumpton. I think he'd be an interesting follow.

Discussion - Avatars

No, not the beautiful blue people in the movie!

PMA2010Avatar

Well, maybe it is about the Na'vi, and that's what I want to discuss here.

(If you have feedback during this transition weekend (12/13/14/15 April, depending on where you are), then leave a comment here or just tweet to @WeRPhotography. If you come across this post later, you can leave a comment or send an email.)

When you have control of a Twitter account, you can change the avatar that is shown on every tweet you send, as well as the header image on the account's profile page.

Just in case you're confused, here's what my personal profile page looks like. The Cookie Monster insert is my avatar (pretty much internet-wide) and the outer image is the header image.

JJWDHeader

I don't know about you guys, but I tend to rely quite a bit on the appearance of the avatar images to quickly ascertain whose tweets I'm reading on Twitter.

Originally, and currently for that matter, I've encouraged @WeRPhotography guest tweeters to change both of these images to reflect their own style.

Those of you who have been paying close attention will realise that the above two statements are in conflict.

It may also be that I am not the only person who feels such conflict. Conflict is bad. Let us set out to resolve this.

Choices and discussion points:
  • Continue to allow each guest tweeter to change both the avatar and the header image to suit themselves.
  • Fix the avatar as a recognisably @WeRPhotography icon, but allow the guest to change the header image.

    Examples:

    F_UK
    @PeopleOfUK

    F_NZ
    @PeopleOfNZ
  • Free rein on the header image, and on a layer of the avatar, but with the avatar having a recognisable @WeRPhotography overlay.

    Examples:

    O_Sweden
    @Sweden

    O_Spain
    @We_R_Spain

    O_Scientists
    @realscientists

    O_Italy
    @I_am_Italy

I, personally, like this idea. It does, of course, present several problems.

  • These avatars are quite small, How do we make an overlay noticeable enough without losing the underlying image?
  • We are photographers! How do we allow enough freedom for guest tweeters to use their own images and still use the overlay.
    • We could make several variations of the overlay available. Perhaps using different corners of the image?
    • We could make clever use of transparency in the overlay(s).
  • How do we make the overlay easily available and easily useable?
    • Google Drive?
    • Windows Live?
    • Dropbox?
    • My personal Flickrstream?
    • Twibbon?
So, what do you think?

ps It has just occurred to me that there is a third image associated with a Twitter account - the profile background. What should we do with that?

Thursday 4 April 2013

Week 3 - Stuart Anderson

What is your name?
Stuart Anderson

What sort of photography do you do?
I try to do a lot of different styles of photography. I'm an amateur. I shoot on holidays and on photography trips. I don't do weddings or studio work. I have a lot of photos of my children. I probably have as many photos of my motorbike in various places around Australia, but I am told that these are only interesting to me.

How long have you been shooting?
I seem to have some very old prints from a school trip when I was 11, but I would say I first thought about taking 'good photos' in about 1992, aged 15, when I went to Nepal. I started to think of photography as my hobby in about 2003-2004 and have really got interested in the ins and outs of the craft for about 4 years.

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, any thing you really love to work with)
Well I do love my Canon 5DMkII. I got it when the prices dropped just before the MkIII came out about a year ago. I'm still getting my head around all the functions of it, but it allows for so much flexibility in challenging situations. I almost always leave the f/4 24-105L lens on it, although I use a 50mm f/1.8 Mk2 at times. I've got a Vanguard Alta-Pro tripod which is really useful because of the 'tilty thing' the centre arm does that lets you get the camera almost on the ground. I cart my gear around in a Lowepro Compurover AW which just fits the carry-on luggage dimensions if you smile nicely to the hostess, but for short outings I use a Crumpler Five Million Dollar Home. I've just bought a Hoya NDx400 filter which I'm looking forward to playing with.

Where can we find you? Twitter account/s, blogs, galleries, any and all web presence that you feel comfortable sharing.
I try and post my favourite shots on Flickr  - and many of the photos I'll post this week are hosted there.
I've put a few selected shots up at 500px. If anyone is interested in purchasing any of the photos I put up this week, I'll be happy to add them there for sale.
Along with being a photographer, I'm also a musician (well, drummer!) and my current project is a songwriting collaboration called Songs 202. You can have a listen here:  (and buy on iTunes!)
I've recently done the drums for a musical about life as a GP (doctor) which will be performed in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival this year. A clip is here:
And I usually tweet at @grover_jones. If you follow me there, you're more likely to get politics and music tweets than photography!

[Edit] New website - StuartAnderson

Where do you live and work? You can be as specific as providing your lat-long coordinates, or as vague as "planet earth".
I'm a GP in Central Gippsland, in the South-East of Victoria, in the South-East of Australia.
(Editor's note: In Australia, a GP is a General Practitioner, a type of medical doctor.)

Is there a Twitter account you would really like to see take over @WeRPhotography for a week?
Strangely, until the last month I've never thought of Twitter as a place to follow photography: I guess Jim's changed that, so I'm hoping to find some folk to follow from this account!
(Editor's note: I am amaze! If anyone else is in the same situation and wants photographers to follow, you can look at anyone who is following/followed by @WeRPhotography; most are at least interested in photography but not all identify themselves as photographers. Alternatively, my own Twitter list of PhotoDudes is now up to 476!)

Week 13 - Allan

What is your name?
Allan Saw

What sort of photography do you do?
I still haven't made up my mind. I've got too much to learn to be concentrating on one genre. Health issues effect my mobility so I'm doing a lot of tabletop type photography at the moment. That's not necessarily where I want to end up.

How long have you been shooting?
I got my first camera for Christmas of 2008, so just over 4 years.

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, any thing you really love to work with)
I love my Tamaron 70-200mm 2.8. My Sony 50mm 1.4 comes a very close 2nd. Of course my camera, a Sony a65, is pretty special.

Where can we find you? Twitter account/s, blogs, galleries, any and all web presence that you feel comfortable sharing.

Where do you live and work? You can be as specific as providing your lat-long coordinates, or as vague as "planet earth".
I live in the outer western suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Due to health issues (I suffer from Multiple Sclerosis) I had to take an early retirement about 3 years ago. Being retired is not all that bad :)

Semi-seriously for about 4 years.

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, any thing you really love to work with)

Where do you live and work? You can be as specific as providing your lat-long coordinates, or as vague as "planet earth".
Eastern suburbs of Sydney, Australia, which is a beautiful coastal part of the world's most beautiful city (OK, I'm biased). Although my twitter profile pic is the north end of a south bound zebra, my face is not uncommon on finance shows or news on Australian television (day job)

Is there a Twitter account you would really like to see take over @WeRPhotography for a week?
I really love the diversity of what you are doing. For one person - maybe @wadelaube (who I have not told about this yet) - Wade is a former photographic editor of the Sydney Morning Herald, now has his own freelance photography business.

Week 11 - Anton

What is your name?
Anton Westermark

What sort of photography do you do?
Anything and everything. Since I'm an amateur I don't really have a niche but rather shoot what I see.

How long have you been shooting?
I bought my first DSLR in... late 2010. Had a variety of compact cameras since I was 15 or so.

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, any thing you really love to work with)
I am quite fond of my 50/1,4 but since I bought a weather resistant DSLR I'm using my kit 18-55 more often than before when I'm out and about.

Where can we find you? Twitter account/s, blogs, galleries, any and all web presence that you feel comfortable sharing.
Twitter: @nihilille (tweeting in Swedish but if I get any foreign followers I'll tweet my photography-related stuff in English),

Portfolio at http://pbaw.wordpress.com. Don't really have a "photograph" presence elsewhere at the moment.

Where do you live and work? You can be as specific as providing your lat-long coordinates, or as vague as "planet earth".
I work as an upper secondary school teacher in Helsingborg, Sweden.

Is there a Twitter account you would really like to see take over @WeRPhotography for a week?

Week 10 - Suzy

What is your name?
Suzy Walker (scuba_suzy)

What sort of photography do you do?
Underwater photography mainly but I’m also studying for a degree course and the assignments don’t always coincide with my underwater trips so those photos vary, I’ve put them on a separate blog though.

How long have you been shooting?
Since 2004 but I’ve only had an SLR since 2008.

What's your favourite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, anything you really love to work with)
Can I say my iPhone?! For underwater I’d say my 60mm lens but I’m about to switch gear soon for underwater work which means I’ll be selling all my Nikon & underwater stuff (if anyone is interested).

Where can we find you? Twitter account/s, blogs, galleries, any and all web presence that you feel comfortable sharing.

Thursday 7 March 2013

Week 9 - Haje

What is your name?
Haje Jan Kamps

What sort of photography do you do?
I've done a lot of darting from one photography genre to another. These days, I'm mostly busy with more experimental photography, but above all, I'm a generalist.

How long have you been shooting?
I've been taking photos for as long as I can remember, but my real passion for photography was sparked when I was able to save up for my first digital camera, back in the late 1990's. From there, I've spent as much time writing about photography as taking photos, as witnessed from the ungodly stack of books I've been involved with so far (see kamps.org)

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, any thing you really love to work with)
I currently shoot mostly with my Canon EOS 5D mk 3 and a 50mm f/1.4 lens, but I'd hasten to add that I think equipment bores me something profoundly. Good photographers are able to take fantastic pictures with everything from iPhones via instant cameras to high-end Hasselblad equipment, and I think the photography world's obsession with equipment is misguided at best.

Having said that, I did invent a photography gadget a couple of years ago, and as a result I'm running my own company these days. So, I guess my favourite piece of photography gear is Triggertrap Mobile. Shameless plug: It helps you trigger your camera with your iPhone or Android phone, based on all sorts of cool things (sound, vibration, time lapses, etc); check out the 90 second info video here.

Where can we find you? Twitter account/s, blogs, galleries, any and all web presence that you feel comfortable sharing.
@Photocritic is my main Twitter account. I blog at Photocritic.org, and my photos can be found on Flickr.com/photocritic

Where do you live and work? You can be as specific as providing your lat-long coordinates, or as vague as "planet earth".
I'm a notorious globe-trotter, but these days I call London, UK home.

Is there a Twitter account you would really like to see take over @WeRPhotography for a week?
Pass, but I'll let you know if I think of anything!

Thursday 28 February 2013

Week 8 - Emily

What is your name?
I'm Emily, but I am known online as Fearful Penguin!

What sort of photography do you do?
Not really sure how to answer this one yet! I am still finding my feet so try a lot of different things. I tend to like shooting from different angles, love geometric patterns and repetition.

I am in the proces of a project 365 this year, trying to take a photo every day. I am hoping this will help me improve my compositional skills and to help me look at things I see everyday in a new way.

How long have you been shooting?
I have been shooting on and off for a few years, but have only recently started developing my skills - I'm definitely a beginner! I got my current camera just over a year ago.

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, anything you really love to work with)
My Sony NEX-3 camera - my first decent camera! I only have the standard 18-55mm lens at the moment, though I hope to get another soon.

Where can we find you? Twitter account/s, blogs, galleries, any and all web presence that you feel comfortable sharing.
I'm at @fearfulpenguin on twitter, and Fearful Penguin on Flickr.
I also run @snapadays on twitter and The Snapadays on Flickr - my Project 365 group!

Where do you live and work? You can be as specific as providing your lat-long coordinates, or as vague as "planet earth".
I'm based in the beautiful county of Yorkshire, UK.

Is there a Twitter account you would really like to see take over @WeRPhotography for a week?

Thursday 7 February 2013

Week 5 - Vlado Kekoc

What is your name?
Vlado Kekoc

What sort of photography do you do?
I'd class myself as a motivated, enthusiast that occasionally makes money from my hobby.  I've been an active member of dpchallenge.com for 7 years, where I regularly enter photography challenges, so shoot whatever theme is on offer.  If pressed, I'd say I'd have a preference for shooting landscapes and cityscapes, but my kids also feature heavily in my photography.

How long have you been shooting?
A LONG time... 20+ years, I guess.  Used my parents Fujica Auto-5 as a teenager; got my own 35mm point-a-shoot as a 21st birthday present and bought my first SLR (Canon EOS 500) a year later.  Moved to digital about 7 years ago when I bought my Canon EOS 40D.

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, any thing you really love to work with )
I'm loving my wireless triggers etc, and my green screen BUT would have to say, if I had to pick ONE thing, it'd be my Manfrotto 141RC tripod.  It was the first accessory I bought, has been all over the world with me and it shows the scars of many treks down rainforest streams, family holidays to the tropics, and trips into town for some night-time cityscapes.

Where can we find you? Twitter account/s, blogs, galleries, any and all web presence that you feel comfortable sharing.
My website/blog is at kekoc.com and on twitter I'm @kekoc.  Everything else can be found from there, I guess.

Where do you live and work? You can be as specific as providing your lat-long coordinates, or as vague as "planet earth".
Melbourne, Australia; World's Most Liveable City, and one of the most photogenic.

Is there a Twitter account you would really like to see take over @WeRPhotography for a week?
I'd love to see fellow Melbournian DPCer, @enzomaisano (aka hotpasta on dpchallenge.com) or US based DPCer @BSpurgeon at the helm of it for a week.  They are two of my favourite photographers around (that have twitter accounts that I know of).

Thursday 31 January 2013

Week 4 - Jay Avena

What is your name?
Norman Jay Avena. You can call me Jay.

What sort of photography do you do?
Like most of you, I have dabbled in several fields of photography but my main interests lie in documentary, travel, and live music photography. I recently quit my software engineering job to pursue photojournalism and I hope I can turn a dream into reality before the year is through.

How long have you been shooting?
I have been a serious hobbyist since 2008 and, as stated above, am looking to be a full-time professional this year.

What's your favorite piece of gear? (for example, Lens, Bag, Camera, Tripod, any thing you really love to work with)
Luckily, I have gotten over the phase of lusting after the latest and the greatest gear and just look to squeeze every bit of image quality out of my current gear. My favorite item would probably be my ultra wide angle (UWA) lens. I guess you can say I'm a wide angle junkie and like to get real close to my subjects. Apart from that, I would choose my 9-stop ND filter if ever I had to choose only one.

Where can we find you? Twitter account/s, blogs, galleries, any and all web presence that you feel comfortable sharing.
I tweet as @blitzkid_A and have a portfolio/blog, exiftentialist
(Editor's note: That is possibly the best title for a photographer's site that I've ever seen!)

Where do you live and work? You can be as specific as providing your lat-long coordinates, or as vague as "planet earth".
I am in one of the Philippines' 7,107 islands and hop across islands every now and then.

Is there a Twitter account you would really like to see take over @WeRPhotography for a week?
Absolutely. He's @jmaentz and he takes the most amazing photos of Filipino indigenous people.
